What does a trunk release switch do?

The trunk release switch, also known simply as the "car trunk release" or "trunk release button," is a component commonly found in vehicles with a sedan, coupe, or other traditional body styles that feature a separate trunk compartment at the rear of the vehicle. The trunk release switch is used to electronically unlock and open the trunk lid.

The trunk release switch is typically located inside the vehicle's cabin, often on the dashboard, center console, or driver's door panel. When pressed or activated, the switch sends a signal to the vehicle's electronic control system to release the trunk's locking mechanism. This allows the trunk lid to be opened without using a physical key.
