How do your car’s A/C and heater Work?

Your car's air conditioning (A/C) and heating systems work together to maintain a comfortable interior environment.
1. Air Conditioning System:
Compressor: The A/C system starts with the compressor, which compresses refrigerant gas, raising its pressure and temperature.
Condenser: The hot, high-pressure refrigerant then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the outside air and transforms into a liquid.
Expansion Valve: The liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, where it experiences a drop in pressure, turning it into a cool gas.
Evaporator: This cool gas travels to the evaporator inside the cabin, absorbing heat from the interior air and cooling it down. A blower fan circulates the cooled air into the car.

2. Heating System:
Engine Coolant: The heating system uses engine coolant, which absorbs heat from the engine. As the engine runs, the coolant circulates through the heating core.
Heating Core: The heating core functions like a small radiator. The warm coolant passes through it, heating the air that blows through the vents.
Blower Fan: A fan blows air over the heating core, distributing warm air into the cabin.

Diagnosing air conditioning issues in your vehicle

  • Reduced Airflow or Lack of Cool Air: This may suggest a defective blower motor or a blocked cabin air filter.
  • Poor Cooling Performance: If the AC isn’t providing adequate cooling, a refrigerant leak could be the cause, often accompanied by oil spots or hissing sounds.
  • Strange Noises from the AC Compressor: If you hear grinding or rattling when the AC is on, it may indicate a failing compressor or internal damage.
  • AC Failing to Activate: If the system doesn’t turn on, the problem might be related to electrical issues or a malfunctioning compressor.
  • Musty Odor: A bad smell when the AC operates could point to mold or mildew buildup in the AC evaporator core.
