What is an oil pump in a car?

An engine oil pump is a mechanical device that pumps oil through the engine to provide lubrication and cooling to its moving parts. It is typically located inside the oil pan and is driven by the engine's crankshaft via a chain or gear system. The pump's main function is to draw oil from the oil pan and circulate it through the engine's oil passages, bearings, and other components. The oil pump also filters the oil, removing contaminants and debris that could damage the engine. The proper operation of the oil pump is critical to the performance and lifespan of the engine, and any problems with the pump can lead to engine damage or failure.

Engine oil pump types

There are two main types of car engine oil pumps:

Gear pumps: Gear pumps are the most common type of oil pump used in automotive engines. They use a pair of interlocking gears to pump oil from the oil pan through the engine's oil passages. How to replace an engine oil pump?

To replace an engine oil pump, the first step is to prepare the vehicle by ensuring it is on a flat surface and the engine is cool. It is also important to have all the necessary tools and replacement parts. The next step is to drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan, being careful not to damage the gasket, which may need to be replaced. Once the oil pan is removed, the oil pump can be located and removed by undoing the mounting bolts holding it in place. Be careful not to damage any of the engine components during this step.

After removing the old oil pump, the new one is ready to be installed in the same location, and the mounting bolts can be tightened to the specified torque. It is also important for you to follow any instructions during this step. Once the new oil pump is installed, the oil pan can be reinstalled, and the mounting bolts can be tightened to the specified torque using a torque wrench. The engine can then be refilled with the recommended amount and type of oil, and the oil filter can be replaced. After all steps are completed, the engine can be started.
