What is a wiper linkage?

A wiper linkage is a mechanism used to connect the wiper arms to the wiper motor. It is designed to move the wipers back and forth across the windshield in a consistent, synchronized manner. The wiper linkage works in combination with the wiper motor to ensure the wipers move exactly as designed. The wiper linkage consists of a series of linkages, or rods, that are connected to the wiper motor, arms, and transmission assembly. The linkage is designed to allow the arms to fold away when not in use, and to move the wipers in a smooth, even motion across the windshield. The wiper linkage must be well lubricated to prevent any binding of the parts as they move. The wiper linkage should be inspected regularly and replaced when necessary, to keep the windshield wipers in good working order.

How to replace a windshield wiper linkage?

Replacing a broken or damaged car wiper linkage begins by removing the wiper arms. Use a small screwdriver or pry bar to carefully pop off the caps covering the nuts on the wiper arms. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the nuts, then gently wiggle the wiper arms until they come off. Then remove the old wiper linkage by locating its installation position. The wiper linkage is usually located under the hood, near the base of the windshield. Generally, you will need pliers to remove all the retaining clips or fasteners holding the linkage in place. And the next step is to install the new windshield wiper linkage. Think about the steps of removing the old one, and installing it in the reverse order. Make sure the new one is positioned in place and secured well by the nuts or bolts. After that, carefully slide the wiper arms back onto the wiper pivots and secure them with the nuts. Be sure to align the arms properly with the windshield and tighten the nuts securely. And then, you come to the last step. turn on the wiper system and test the wipers to make sure they move smoothly and do not hit the windshield frame or other parts of the vehicle.

How much does a wiper linkage repair cost?

Depending on the extent of the damage and the specific design of the wiper linkage, in some cases, a windshield wiper linkage can be fixed or repaired rather than replaced with a new one. Speaking of the cost, a broken wiper linkage repair can cost anywhere between $20 and $150, but it also varies from several factors such as the make and model of the vehicle, the extent of the damage, and the labor rates in your area. (Note: It's always best to get a detailed quote from a professional mechanic before proceeding with any repairs.)  In A-Premium, we have different types of windshield wiper linkages whose price can be as low as $23.99.
